Busy weekend… trying to keep up with my World Cup viewing schedule. The highlight this weekend was Germany’s 8 to 0 decimation of a sad Saudi Arabian squad. Bahahah… I’ll go out on a limb and give the Germans credit, which no one else is doing, and state that I fully expect to see them in the final four.. most likely with Argentina, Italy and Brazil.

Went and saw Penn & Teller at the Wilshire Theater on Saturday. Great show, although ridiculously short. They sort of made up for it by hanging out after to gawk at the females and make weird squiggles on the playbill…

After that, Wendy and I headed to El Coyote for a few margaritas and the Argentina v Nigeria match. Almost impossible to get a drink as all the bartenders were glued to the TV. Headed home to catch the end and had a real “small world” moment as I called up a friend in London and talked about South American and African sports teams playing in Japan from North America and Europe. If only we had been drinking Fosters with ice cubs from the poles…

Sunday brought my first World Cup BBQ only to have KABC-LA decide not to broadcast the England v Sweden game and run a telethon instead. What the hell is wrong with this country? This is the biggest sports event in the world, for chrissakes. Luckily Telemundo was showing a couple of games, and they’re announcers are better even if you can’t understand them.

Everyone came, gamely pretended to be interested in soccer for about 20 minutes, ate and patiently waited for the games to end and the Lakers game to come on. Since the Lakers won, I’m sure we’ll be doing this again and I’ll still force people to come over early and watch a real sport first.
