i’m sick

Wednesday, June 26th, 2002

Apparently it’s time for my annual cold. I feel like crap, everything aches, and I want to crawl into bed but I’m not tired and there’s a game in 3 hours.

Just got back from seeing Minority Report. Speilberg has apparently forgotten how to edit his movies. Like AI, approximately 1/3 of the movie was total rubbish that you never would have missed. Also like AI, Minority Report was a crap story to begin with. Can’t someone in Hollywood sink a few hundred million into one of the many really good sci-fi stories out there? Please?

I must find some drugs. Or at least a breath mint, as Wendy has pointed out the od d’phleghm.

Germany advance, most likely to lose to Brazil, but you never know.
All is well in the world.

Waiting for the bad call

Monday, June 24th, 2002

Just a few hours away from Germany v S. Korea… now, I don’t want to go off on a rant here… but I’m incredibly curious about this game. South Korea has played quite well, and I don’t want to take anything away from them

BUT

in BOTH of their last two games, their asses were saved by ridiculously bad calls. Blatently bad calls. Fire the fucking ref bad calls. Spain had a goal taken away from them on a bad call early in the game, leading to an overtime win for South Korea. In the game before that, Italy had - count them, not one, but two - goals taken away from them by bad calls. One blatent, the other slightly less so but still very, very iffy.

So, they’re playing in South Korea. 50,000+ screaming South Korean fans. Two mighty opponents fall, both of them by far outplaying the Koreans until bad calls sucked the morale right out of the opposing teams.

Just one man’s opinion, but if mighty Deutschland should fall due to a bad call, here’s one World Cup fan that will be boycotting the final.

A nice long weekend spent doing next to nothing. This is one of the first times I’ve even sat at my computer, except for deleting junk email. If there was true targeting marketing, apparently I’d be looking to refinance a home I don’t own to purchase mass marketing email lists, get a penis extension and check out some “girls on the farm”.

Anyway, Wendy and I vespa’d around, played a little soccer and that’s about it really. Watched Vanilla Sky, which was OK… I seem to remember there being some hoopla about it being a little confusing, which I didn’t get. If anything, they beat you over the head with the whole cyrogenics thing so I knew it was going to be a step-out-of-the-shower, it’s-all-a-dream thing 10 minutes in.

Read a great book called Year Zero. It was right up my alley - typical SF type crap where a professor type becomes and Indiana Jones adventurer and gets the beautiful girl, but great ideas and concepts mixed in there. Love when science takes on religion. I won’t give anything else away in case anyone wants to read it.

I’m also trying to track down a copy of Wolfram’s A New Kind of Science since I read about it in Wired… I’ve stayed away from hard science books recently but I’m ready to dive in again and this one sounds mind-blowing.

Well that’s it for now. Back to the shit tomorrow… entering the last week of world cup action as well.

Work, work, work

An entire day wasted crafting a monster proposal. Better get the damn gig. Alright, the day didn’t start until 2:00 because I needed sleep after last night’s footie marathon.

No surprises in terms of the outcomes… Brazil and Germany advance, England and the USA go home. England deserved to lose against Brazil… a fairly strong first half but some key defensive mistakes lead to a 2:1 lead for Brazil going into the half. The second half, England seemed completely demoralized, and couldn’t put a single play together. Brazil was down a man for most of the second half, and England still couldn’t get it together, so adios. A shame, really. This should have been the most exciting game of the Cup…

The surprise game ended up being Germany v USA! Sure, it’s only a 1:0 win for Germany, but what a barnstormer! The US really outplayed the Germans, and have nothing to be ashamed about. Fly home with heads help up high. You played an amazing game, and should have won.

Got a few more hours until Spain and Korea… that one should be fun. I’m taping Senegal v Turkey because I just can’t do another alnighter and frankly, I couldn’t give a toss about those two.
