Oakenfold @ the Mayan

Tuesday, June 18th, 2002

It’s almost three and I’m tired and cranky. Just finished programming all the login and reg pages for the Oakenfold site, and that’s good enough for tonight. Content tomorrow. I’m contemplating staying up for the Korea Italy game, but the VCR is set and I’m too damn tired to think. I’ll watch it tomorrow while hitting the exercise bike.

The oakenfold show was great - he spun a great set, really good stuff. Wendy got some awesome pictures and she’s still up processing them, hence me whittling away on the blog. Still annoyed with the whole scenario… if you’re doing a DJ set, do it in a place with lots of room for dancing, something with a club atmosphere. I don’t get these rock venue DJ sets that are overpacked. Lighters out, he’s scratchin’! And I’m not even going to start on the standard LA scene. About 200 people in front of us that look much more like they should be on “the list” but aren’t, while we are and we can’t get in either. Oh well. We made it eventually, cheers to Jeremy for finding us and dragging us in. Or me, anyway. Wendy’s hair and stunning good looks can get her in anywhere. I’m going to start a support club for schlubby boyfriends stuck waiting outside.

Here’s a pic and the pass… yes, the pass says Universal. Yes, the show was at the Mayan. That should give you a good indication of the excellent organization involved.

heading out to the mayan to catch paul oakenfold… it’s a work trip, believe it or not. wendy’s got the camera slung over her shoulder - supposed to take some live shots for a special website we’re building for the new album.

work or no work, it’s gin and tonic for me! the show should be pretty good as well… the new album’s really good, catches me in a way that most recent techno releases haven’t managed to do. too bad he’ll be DJ’ing instead of playing live… I’ve never understood the fun in watching people put on vinyl copies of the music they’ve done. a bit like hitting play on the tape, isn’t it?

More cup commentary - Brazil

Monday, June 17th, 2002

Brazil may have won 2:0 but that score doesn’t do Belgium any justice. Brazil showed they weren’t invincible in this game, and I hope England was watching. This was really Brazil’s first challenge.. they had a cake-walk in their group, and Belgium totally shut them down for the first 60 minutes of the game. Basically, Brazil won because of Belgium’s bad luck. Belgium not only managed to shut down Brazil’s offense, they found some serious holes in Brazil’s defense but just couldn’t manage to get the ball in the back of the net. Well, they did once, but a poor call by the ref took that goal away from Belgium early in the game.

Brazil finally scored somewhere around the 65th minute, and that goal was again due to bad Belgian luck. The Belgian keeper had the shot covered, except for the ricochet off a Belgian defender. Still, the Belgians kept up the pressure, firing off shot after shot that hit the post, the goalie, their own teammates… everything but the net. Brazil scored a second goal in the final minutes when Belgium was throwing everything they had in a desperate offensive bid to score an equalizer and stay in the game…

The England / Brazil match on Friday is looking to be one of the best games of the Cup… can’t wait.

What the hell am I going to write about when this is all over?

USA! USA!

Monday, June 17th, 2002

2:0!!!!!! Fuck, yeah! First time ever winning a game in the round of 16! First time ever in the Quarterfinals!

Too bad we’re playing Germany, and will get decimated. But so what! Good job, USA! So, Friday… doubleheader party. We’ll start at 11:25 watching England play the winner of the Brazil / Belgium game (so, basically, we’ll watch England lose to Brazil) and then we’ll drink for a few hours before the Germany USA game.

Be here or don’t!

Parental fun

Sunday, June 16th, 2002

Well, it’s Father’s Day… and my mom’s birthday is later this week, so the parents are on their way out here so I can take them to an early dinner. I love my parents, but man, they can drive me crazy. Thank God they’re coming out here, so I can avoid the weekly ritual of fixing all the electronics in their house. I’m convinced that the second I leave they run around the house taking a ball pin hammer to anything with a microchip in it.

By the way, for those of you who think I’m way to into the World Cup - a) my Dad has watched every single game live and b) a direct quote from Wendy as we’re watching the Spain v Ireland game - “Spain must be sweating their balls off!”

What a lovely visual.
