The god of irony frowns

Thursday, August 15th, 2002

Jason, you’ll be happy to know that since my entry yesterday, a whole myriad of small, annoying problems have popped up and I’ve been in a bad mood for approximately 20 hours straight now.

I’d give any of my duplicate body parts for a decent PC tech anywhere in the greater Los Angeles vicinity. I’d also throw in another one for more online DMV forms and processing. And last, but certainly not least, for my accountant to find a decent, quasi-legal tax loophole.

Off to lunch.

problems of excess

Wednesday, August 14th, 2002

Examples of personal dilemmas from a few years ago: not sure if I will be able to cover rent this month; car keeps breaking down; they might actually fire me this time…

Random sampling of problems I’m dealing with today: Schwab still hasn’t transferred funds from my money market to my SEP-IRA account, and it needs to happen by tomorrow for tax reasons; my Wine Club sent me a Merlot and a Chardonnay this month when I SPECIFICALLY requested two Cabs.

How life has changed.

burning man pact / weekend wrapup

Wednesday, August 14th, 2002

Just got back from drinks at Finn McCool’s with Simon and Dave… this basically turned into an agreement to go to Burning Man together next year. Not enough time to get it together properly this year, so next year it is. The RV idea was discussed, but I’m thinking we rent a proper touring bus. Got the Halloween interactive art party this year as a test run, then we’ve got a year to blow whatever we do for Halloween up about 20 times as big for Burning Man. So we’re going.

Anyway, back to the weekend wrap up. It’s a bit late, but what the hell. I already covered Friday and Wendy’s art opening… Saturday was supposed to involve seeing a new heir to the Guns and Roses throne play a bar in Malibu, but much to my great pleasure they cancelled so Wendy and I just chilled at home.

Sunday, however, was the Goth, the Bad, and the Ugly… off to see Siouxsie and the Banshees at the Palladium. Was never a huge fan, but always thought her stuff was good. David J (bass player in Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, did some really crap stuff on his own) opened and played his really crap stuff, plus horrible renditions of L&R and Bauhaus tunes, including Bela Lugosi’s Dead. Sacriledge. Oh well, the aging Goths lapped it up. Siouxise did a good job, although the set list heavily favored the very early punky stuff, which was much further down my list of enjoyable toonage. Oh well. People watching was the best aspect - goths, young and old. Amazing.

That was pretty much it, really. I was going to write more but if you don’t nail it at the time, it all seems kind of lame later on.

My first anonymous flame!

Tuesday, August 13th, 2002

So I guess people I don’t actually know are now looking at this little waste of space…. I got my first anonymous flame this morning, on a blog entry almost two months old now. I particularly enjoy the ironic nature of the email address - nospam@hotmail.com. Anyway, it was for my Jesus Jones entry, where we went to the show only to find an empty venue as it was cancelled. here’s the lovely comment in full:

>There’s always one retard though who still turns up when a gig is cancelled,
>I knew it was cancelled and I live in the UK.
>You want to learn how to use a phone to check with the venue prior to leaving.
>The new album is superb. What do you know about music? You’re American!

The venue not only had no information about the show being cancelled on their phone line or website, they still had “JESUS JONES - TONIGHT!” on their marquee. Ticketmaster also had no info about the show being cancelled on their phone line or website, nor did Goldenvoice, the promoters. Or the band’s website, for that matter. So fuck off, limey.

By the way, I’m a huge Jesus Jones fan. Most people think I’m insane for that. I found Doubt and Perverse, in particular, to be groundbreaking, amazing pieces of work. Unfortunately, the new album is far from superb. And about being American… well, at least we have the good sense to ignore Robbie Williams.

xxx

Words cannot describe the sheer shittiness of xxx. Perhaps the worst movie I have ever seen. I actually feel less intelligent having watched it.

more on the weekend later.
